Vulgar Numismatics and ExonumiaBecause there is no one guide detailing all of the vulgar creations made out of coins, I've decided to write this guide. In no way is this meant to be definitive. I welgee any additions of items I have missed.Potty Coins:These are mostly known as "Potty Dollars" and are a majority of the time made out of Trade Dollars. 19th Century engravers altered the Seated Liberty into a Seated Liberty on a chamber pot. They do, however, turn up on half dollars, and rarely on smaller size seated material (the only of the latter that I have seen being in a Heritage auction). Each piece is unique, just like love tokens, and the value generally matters on how well the piece has been done. Crudely engraved pieces generally sell for 60 to 100 dollars, while very well detailed pieces can reach upwards of 400 dollars. Sometimes Liberty is fully nude, sometimes partially, and sometimes almost fully clothed. I've seen some that I am almost sure are modern alterations, yet they still sell for the forementioned prices.X Rated Flying Eagle Cents:These are tough to find. They feature the flying eagle on the cent altered into a flying male genitalia. My girlfriend actually cherrypicked one of these at a local show! Some dealers have some pretty bad eyesight. I've only seen one sold, and it was by me on okay. The piece brought 75 dollars. I'd say that would be an average price for a well done piece, and less for more crudely done pieces.X Rated Large/Small/Half C#ntsThese are some of the most easily found of the altered vulgar coins. These are cents where the the E in cent on the reverse has been altered to a U to spell you know what. Around eighty percent, in my estimate, were done on Braided Hair Large Cents. I at one point put together a red book set of these and actually got 19 out of the 30 some varieties. Sometimes they are found on Classic Head cents, but I have never seen any on earlier cents. Very rarely these also turn up on later date Half Cents and early Flying Eagle Cents. In fact, I have an X rated Flying Eagle piece that is also a Small C#nt! Why were these made? No one really knows, and I would love to hear some ideas. My two best guesses are 1. Confederate civil war soldiers altered them out of anger, or less likely 2. They were used as Bordello tokens. Prices on these pieces very. They can often be cherrypicked for 10-20 dollars. When the U is very well done they are generally worth more. Last year I saw a large cent with the altered E advertised as a mint error, which sold for well over 200 dollars. Also, the rarer the date or variety, the more they are worth. One must remember that this alteration could still take place today, just like Hobo Nickels are still made. But in my opinion, most of the ones you find are original.Bordello TokensI have to admit I'm not that knowledgeable in this area. Most of what I see on okay are reproductions, so if you are looking for original pieces you better do your research first. The "Tokens And Medals" book from 1992 features an extensive list of fantasy pieces.OtherOther numismatic adult oriented coins and tokens exist. There are many hoards of "flipper" tokens where one side says HEADS YOU WIN featuring a topless women, and TAILS YOU LOSE on the reverse featuring a ladies naked bottom. These tend to sell for upwards of 2-3 dollars a piece sometimes, but they are very gemon. There are also state quarter parodies featuring naked women on them. While there are many other numismatic/exonumia items featuring naked women, such as obsolete currency, pocket mirrors, art medals, et al., I don't consider these "vulgar" and are beyong the scope of this guide. Weather the pocket mirrors are vulgar or art may be up for debate, though.If you feel I have missed anything, or have any questions about the content of this guide, please feel free to message me!
